Review: Reign.Broke.Better - Free EP

“Storming rock-rebel anthem full of chunky guitar and funky bass”

by Mike Richardson, Writer & Editor

With the plethora of unsigned bands out there it’s easy to get lost in a mire of same-sounding wannabees, but once in a while you find a real diamond in the rough. London based Reign.Broke.Better are definitely one of the bands that sparkles. They have a fresh, funky rock sound that just makes you want to move your feet, a hot and sweaty live show and to top it off a new and fantastically well thought out -track EP

The brand new opening track “Beg Me” kicks off with their trademark crunchy, driving riffs and a groove laden bass line. Vocalist Jemma has obviously been working hard and her performance is nothing short of breathtaking with whether she is singing perfect multi-part harmonies or screaming the roof off in the break. The next three outings are subtle yet superbly effective revisions of some of their older songs, “Hang Your Head”, “Are You Sure?” and “Only Do The Same”. In all cases they sound tighter and much more polished than the previous versions. Subtle tweaks to tempo, multi-tracked vocals and production values that really wouldn’t sound out of place on a major label release give the tracks a totally new lease of life. With catchy, sing-along choruses and an eminently danceable hard rock feel you’re bound to be humming one of these tracks for weeks or months after hearing them.

Finishing off the EP in style is a cheeky little cover of Girls Aloud’s “No Good Advice”. Reworked into a storming rock-rebel anthem full of chunky guitar and funky bass Jemma really makes the song her own, filling it with feeling and emotion like you wouldn’t believe possible, making you believe int he song and the singer at the same time.

If this EP is anything to go by, Reign.Broke.Better are on the verge of something huge. The fact that they are willing to give away music of this quality for nothing (yes you heard that - it’s free to download) is simply amazing. Do yourself a favour and get it.

This is exactly how we write songs too.
